Iomega TV with Boxee

Overview:

For those people that have experienced using a D-Link Boxee Box the Iomega TV with Boxee is certainly a step up; or maybe two steps up if you want. If you’ve previously owned an Apple TV you certainly know how it feels to be very limited in terms of what you can do.

Apple products are surely only meant for use with other Apple products and services which means using the Apple TV is like being caged inside a specific store in the mall without being allowed to go to other stores; sad isn’t it?

But with the D-Link Boxee people have been able to go beyond the walled Apple city and with the Iomega TV things just got a whole lot better. The only problem is that the Iomega TV is not wallet friendly. The price of the Iomega TV almost goes double the price of the Apple TV, but is the price really worth the function?

Features:

The Iomega TV is a network audio and video player that has Ethernet and WiFi and internet streaming capabilities. The Iomega TV has HDMI and is DLNA certified.

There is a very wide range of audio formats that the Iomega TV can run such as MP3, WAV, WMA, OGG, AAC, AC3, FLAC and APE. As compared to the Apple TV that only allows MP4, the Iomega TV has a wider range and is not limited to only certain products.

As for video formats the list is longer than what you may have expected. The video formats that the Iomega TV can are the following: AVI, DivX 3, DivX 4, TRP, M2TS, TS, TP, MKV, FLV, WMV, M4V, MOV, VOB, ISO, IFO, MPEG-2, MPEG-1, MPEG-4, MPEG, AVC, DAT, XviD, WMV9, ASF and H.264.

If you’re like me you most likely have not heard of some of these formats. Some of these video and audio formats are used by different media but without us really knowing it. Some unfamiliar video formats are used as a format for easy transferring.

The Iomega TV also allows you to view pictures in multiple and well known formats such as JPEG, BMP, TIFF, PNG and GIF. These are the most used photo formats all over the world meaning that you shouldn’t have any troubles with the Iomega TV when viewing pictures.

The sound system of the Iomega TV is an amazing Dolby Digital Plus, DTS and has PC streaming to boot for those moments when you want to flash on the big screen what you see on your monitor.

Performance:

The Iomega TV delivers more than what its predecessor, the D-Link Boxee, can. If the videos that are being played are of high quality then the Iomega TV spares no expense because the quality is certainly kept. The original video doesn’t have blurry corners or poor hues and the Iomega TV provides the same quality as well.

The audio is as crisp as ever. Playing original albums with the Iomega TV makes it seem like the singer is right next to me. A word of caution when playing loud music: lock the doors and barricade the windows because grouchy next door neighbours may charge in unexpectedly.

Viewing pictures and transferring files has never been better. High definition pictures show up great with the Iomega TV. No graining effect and especially no pixilation. Transferring files is as easy as connecting the cables and just hitting copy and paste. Streaming from your PC is also simple.

Verdict:

The Iomega TV with Boxee is definitely a must have. This little box gets 4 stars out of a possible 5. All the advantages are obvious: clear video, crisp audio and quality pictures. This may be a bit hard and confusing to use in the beginning but after a few tries you’ll get used to this just like the D-Link Boxee.

The only problem though is that this really screams out luxury because the price is really steep as it goes almost double the price of the Apple TV. If you’re willing to shell out a few hundred dollars for such an amazing piece of tech then you’ll get your money’s worth no doubt about it; that is if you can easily let go of a few hundreds.
